“Universal Pharmacy”
Mixed Media and resin cast, 2019.
This work began as a response to sociologist Ivan Illich's "Medical Nemesis: The Expropriation of Health". Regarding "health" as a reflexive, theoretical concept in dynamic intersection with the rise of consumerism, double binds are revealed.
The bio-pharmacological mandala is created with found and recycled pharmaceuticals. It is inspired by lifelong participation in the psychiatric survivor movement, as well as by consciousness raising movements and sociological commentary of many eras, particularly the 1970s.
The aesthetic imprint of the mandala is fragmented upon closer inspection. A "prescription for humanity" provides further context.
